Hydropower — from micro-hydro to pumped storage.

With expertise across engineering, procurement, construction and management, Glorinda designs, installs and delivers hydroelectric plants — including turbines such as hydrodynamic screw, Francis, Kaplan and Pelton.

Overview

Hydropower — from micro-hydro to pumped storage.

Glorinda’s hydroelectric activities span field and project feasibility studies; conceptual, basic and detailed engineering; EPC and EPCM delivery; technical assistance in hardware testing; and testing, initial implementation and commissioning. Projects can be delivered as stand-by plants.

We supply turbines matched to the head and flow — hydrodynamic screw, Francis, Kaplan and Pelton — for run-of-river, micro-hydropower and pumped-storage schemes that double as long-duration energy storage.

Typical applications

Where it fits

  • Pumped-storage hydropower
  • Run-of-river schemes
  • Micro-hydropower systems
  • Hydrodynamic screw turbines
  • Francis / Kaplan / Pelton turbines
  • Grid balancing via storage

Common challenges

  • Matching turbine type to head and flow
  • Feasibility and hydrological uncertainty
  • Grid balancing for variable renewables
  • Remote-site power without a grid

  • Feasibility, EPC and EPCM delivery
  • Pumped storage for long-duration balancing
  • Micro-hydropower for distributed sites

Our approach

Matching the machine to the water

Hydropower is the one renewable where the equipment selection is genuinely determined by physics rather than preference. Head and flow decide the turbine, and getting that selection wrong is expensive to correct once civil works are in the ground.

We supply hydrodynamic screw turbines for very low head, Kaplan for low head and high flow, Francis across the broad mid-range, and Pelton for high head and low flow. The selection follows a hydrological assessment rather than a catalogue, and it is made early enough to inform the civil design rather than being forced to fit it.

Pumped storage deserves separate mention. It remains the most established form of long-duration energy storage in the world, and where topography allows it, a pump-turbine scheme will out-perform batteries on both duration and asset life. We engineer these as storage assets rather than as generation projects, sized against the grid balancing they are being asked to do.

    Commissioning

Installation supervision, testing, start-up and the training that lets your team run the plant.

  • 05

    Support

Operation, troubleshooting, process optimisation, maintenance and spare parts for the life of the asset.

FAQ

Good to know

Which turbines do you supply?

Hydrodynamic screw, Francis, Kaplan and Pelton, selected for the site’s head and flow.

Can hydropower store energy?

Yes — pumped-storage hydropower is one of the most established forms of long-duration energy storage, and we engineer pump-turbine schemes for grid balancing.

Match a turbine to your site.

Give us the head, flow and grid context and we will propose a hydropower scheme and turbine selection.
